Environmental Physics & applied Mathematics

Specialising in Fluid Mechanics

Dr Freeman J Cook

Environmental Physicist/Director

Dr Freeman Cook is an Environmental Physicist who has specialised in fluid transport, mainly through porous media.

With over 30 years of experience in his field, he has published in excess of 250 journal papers, book chapters, conference papers and reports. He is well known for his work in the area of Biophysics, where he has developed measurement and modelling techniques of fluid transport in the natural environment.

Starting his research career as a Science Technician in the DSIR Soil Bureau in New Zealand, he worked there for 16 years, rising to Leader of the Soil Water Processes Group. He emigrated to Australia in 1991, to join CSIRO Environmental Mechanics as a Research Scientist. Some 20 years later, having ascended to the level of Senior Principal Research Scientist, he made the decision to form his own consulting company, Freeman Cook and Associates.

This decision has given him the freedom to focus all his attention on his current projects and important research ideas, providing solutions to a wide range of environmental concerns.

Freeman is ably assisted on the administrative side of the business by his wife Lesley and is in regular contact with some of the best Applied Mathematicians, whose assistance can be solicited as required.

IRRIGATION AND DRAINAGE

Dr Cook has developed models and methods for measuring irrigation and drainage. Work on spray irrigation showed that surface topography could severely change the uniformity of water distribution within the soil and hence irrigation efficiency (Cook 1983). Models have been developed to predict the wetting patterns under trickle irrigation and are now widely adopted (Cook 2003 a, b; Cote et al. 2003; Cook et al. 2006). Along with others Dr Cook developed the filter method for land treatment of waste water using a drainage network (Jayawardane 2004). Drainage theory was used to predict the effect of tree alley spacing on groundwater heights (Stirzaker et al. 1999). For the sugar cane industry the FLAASH model was developed to predict acid fluxes to drains (Cook et al. 2001, 2002) and acid drainage hazard in a catchment (Cook et al. 2003). Also a model for coupled drainage and evaporation was developed (Cook & Rassam 2002).

MODELLING ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS

Modelling water and solute flow has been a constant theme in Dr Cook’s work starting with his Masters Thesis (Cook 1980). Waste water modelling in Whakarewarewa Forest (Cook 1994) was followed by waste water modelling in Australia (Smith et al. 1996) leading to the development of the filter model (Jayawardane 2004). Solute transport modelling of salt (Bristow 2006) and acid solute transport (Cook et al. 2003; Rigby et al. 2006) has been carried out. Methods to improve solute transport models (Neumann et al. 2011) and upscaling of pesticides in runoff from catchments (Cook et al. 2011) were published recently. Other modelling work has included oxygen transport (Cook & Knight 2003; Cook & Orchard 2008).

DATA ANALYSIS

Analysis of experimental data is a proven skill which has covered many aspects of environmental physics from the effects of gypsum slots on water flow (Cook et al. 1989) to analysis and modelling of heating of vegetable oil (Topp et al. 2003). Dr Cook has also analysed tree root data (Thomas et al. 1999), effects of iron and aluminum on dissolved oxygen concentrations (Cook et al. 2000) and the sheer strength of soils (Rassam & Cook 2002). More recently he has worked on wind functions for evaporation from water bodies (McJannet et al. 2011), prediction of soil properties (Cook & Cresswell 2008) and acid fluxes to lakes (Cook et al. 2011).

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

A strong experimental design is vital for the obtainment of meaningful data from which relevant analyses and conclusions can be drawn. Dr Cook has shown expertise in this field from his early work on microbial processes (Orchard & Cook 1983) to more recently on acid fluxes to the Lower Lakes (Cook et al. 2011), and evaporation from water bodies (McJannet et al. 2011). He has also designed instruments (Cook 1981; Cook 1991; Cook 2008) and analysis methods (Cook & Broeren 1994; Cook & Kelliher 2004 and Cook & Cresswell 2008).

SOIL HYDROLOGY

Dr Cook’s scientific career began with his work on soil physics and water transport (Cook 1976; Cook 1980). He later went on to specialise in drainage and irrigation components of soil hydrology. More recently he has been the research leader for the eWater CRC Catchments and Climate program with the management of research to develop the new SOURCE catchment hydrology model (Cook et al. 2008).
